Malaysia-Singapore National Transfer Accounts Sharing Session

ABOUT

The National Transfer of Accounts is a framework for understanding the generational economy – the flows of resources throughout life, and between individuals, households, the state, and the rest of the economy.

This is a sharing between researchers in Singapore and Malaysia on their respective work. Topics include the decomposition of the economic support ratio in Singapore, changes in Singapore’s Life Cycle Deficit over the years, ageing, labour productivity and economic growth, and financing old age, the sources of demographic dividends in the past and in the future.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Siti Anom Ahmad is the Director of Malaysian Research Institute of Ageing (MyAgeing™). She is also a Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia.

Siti Anom received her PhD in Electronics in 2009 and MSc in Microelectronics System Design in 2004 from the University of Southampton, UK. She received her BEng in Electronic/ Computer from UPM in 1999. She is a Professional Engineer of Board of Engineers Malaysia, Chartered Engineer of Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), Senior Member of Institute of Electrical& Electronic Engineering (IEEE) and member of the Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM). Her research interests are biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, gerontechnology and intelligent control system.

Eddie Choo is Research Associate at the Institute of Policy Studies at the Governance and Economy Department.

His current projects include, topics related to Singapore’s National Transfer Accounts, and a public engagement project on future trends for Singapore.

He has worked in various public and non-profit sectors.

Christopher Gee is Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies where he leads the Governance and Economy Department.

Christopher has published several papers on retirement financing, strengthening old-age income support and managing healthcare costs for an ageing population. Christopher was previously in investment banking, leading equity research teams covering Singapore and Malaysia, and the Asian real estate sector. He has a BA (Law) from the University of Nottingham and holds the CFA charter.

Christopher holds a joint appointment with the National University of Singapore’s Department of Real Estate, and is a non-executive director of CapitaLand China Trust, a Singapore-listed real estate investment trust with a portfolio of shopping malls in China.

Sharifah Azizah Haron is an Associate Professor of Family/Household Economics and Consumption Economics at the Faculty of Human Ecology, Universiti Putra Malaysia and a Research Associate at the Malaysian Research Institute on Ageing [MyAgeing].

Sharifah is the coordinator of the NTA project for Malaysia. Her research interest includes consumption, household production, household economic wellbeing, poverty, ageing and generational economy [NTA]. She has a bachelor’s degree in Economics (Hons.) from the International Islamic University, Malaysia, a Master’s degree in Consumer Economics from The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, and a Ph.D. in Family Economics from the University of Missouri, Columbia.

Mohd Yusof Saari is an Associate Professor at School of Business and Economics at Universiti Putra Malaysia. Recently, he has seconded to the EIS-UPMCS Centre for Future Labour Market Studies (EU-ERA) as a chief economist. In addition to research and consultation, Yusof actively involves in the economic planning and development of various national and international agencies and bodies. The highest recognition in his career when he has been appointed and seconded to the Secretariate of Economic Action Council (EAC) of Prime Minister’s Department from April to June 2020. Yusof is also one of the prominent speakers and writers in the Malaysian news and printed media.

Yusof holds a Ph.D degree in Economics from the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, and has written extensively on issues related to development economics with specific applications of input-output, social accounting matrix (SAM) and applied general equilibrium models.
